High Performance
Technology
Scalable n-Tier Architecture
System 7 is an n-tier application consisting of four
independent tiers:
The User Interface tier includes HTML
pages hosted by Microsoft Internet Information Server for the Queries
and Extranet functions of the application. The balance of the User Interface
tier is an unrestricted Multiple Document Interface that allows
simultaneous access to as many data entry, reporting, processing and HTML
functions as allowed by either personal workstation memory or Windows
Terminal Server capacities.
The User-Centric Business Logic tier is
built using Microsoft Visual Basic. Its purpose is to provide instant
validation and business rules enforcement to the application.
The Data-Centric Business Logic tier
includes all database access routines for System 7. It may be co-located on
the same server as the Database or may operate on an unlimited number of
parallel servers to increase performance in demanding applications. This
tier has been written with Microsoft Visual Basic.
The Database tier uses Microsoft SQL
Server 2000. One of the primary design goals in creating System 7 as an
n-Tier application was to enable the effective and efficient substitution of
either Oracle or IBM DB2 database technologies to meet
specific requirements.
Easy to Maintain Normalized Database
Normalization of a database involves a dedicated focus
on storing all system activities as independent transactions and all master
tables as purely relational reference information. Some accounting systems
simplify their programming logic by storing data redundantly, typically in
the form of summary buckets that accumulate data from a source transaction
table. The challenge with this arrangement is to keep the information
synchronized between the two tables. Repair utilities and data monitoring
reports add to the administrative workload of supporting a non-normalized
database.
System 7 in contrast was designed from the start to
store 99.999% of its data elements in a single
database location. This fact, combined with the relational and
data integrity inherent in a database server ensures that
no data is ever lost or accidentally blended
with unrelated information. All reports are driven from actual source
transactional detail, no matter how highly summarized. This atomization of
data allows many reports to offer Summary, Detail and Exploded levels of
presentation as options at the time of printing. Database normalization
facilitates constant system stability, accuracy and accessibility.
Remote Access Performance Tuning
System 7 is designed for use with
gigantic databases that must be accessible
worldwide. Key tables easily climb into the millions of data
records as history is accumulated and the scope of the use of the system
broadens as the benefits of Contract Intelligence are recognized throughout
the organization. The Scalable Lookup functionality allows each user
to establish the maximum number of data records that will be pulled into
view by each search command. The List Manager maintains actively used
Reference Tables as an automatically updated locally accessible
resource. Combined, these two services minimize the
system bandwidth required to place data and information in front of the user
to that which is needed for maximum system responsiveness. These
technologies combined with System 7’s highly tuned
n-Tier architecture provide optimum system performance through
all types of connection technologies to branch offices and road warriors all
over the world.
Failed Transaction Rollback
Microsoft Component Services (MCS) provides
System 7 with important scalability and performance functionality. MCS is
the core technology used to ensure maximum system and database stability
under all network topologies and workstation
configurations. MCS’ ability to consolidate database user
connections reduces network communications traffic. MCS’ Transaction
Rollback allows System 7 users to initiate complex posting processes such as
Contract Revisions with the confidence that should a hardware or
software failure occur at a critical moment, the entirety of any affected
transaction will be automatically cancelled and then reprocessed intact at
the earliest opportunity. System 7 is engineered to
support worldwide operations of any magnitude in user count, location
diversity and data volumes.
Referential and Data Integrity
The System 7 database, while significantly
consolidated from predecessor Jaguar generations, contains an array of
cross-linked and synchronized Reference Tables and Transaction
Files. Referential Integrity is activated throughout the database
in order to assure that data records do not unexpectedly become orphaned due
to user error or rare software glitches, eliminating the expensive
requirement for constant human database surveillance and administration.
Data Integrity ensures that wherever system validity requires a column
of data in a table to be free of duplicate values (particularly record
keys), this occurrence becomes impossible. Accidentally duplicated data
records that can otherwise “haunt” a system are prevented. Referential and
Data Integrity work together within a Normalized database design to provide
exceptionally reliable,
predictable and
maintainable data storage.
Source Code Options
System 7 uses mainstream software development
technologies that are familiar to Information Technology departments at many
large organizations. Microsoft Visual Basic, MS Internet
Information Server, MS SQL Server 2000, MS Visual SourceSafe,
MS Visio, Crystal Decisions Crystal Reports are the
tools used to produce the magic. Jaguar offers a Site License (all
modules, unlimited users) that includes 100%
developer access to Source Code for self-support, self-maintenance and
self-development, as desired. Jaguar also offers a Conditional
Source Code License option for companies whose mission critical use of
System 7 demands that on-site technical support be continuously available.
