Microsoft Presents Video
On Demand Vision
Microsoft,
eMotion and
Jaguar used Streaming Media West
in Long Beach as the first public showcase of the value of seamless
integration between Digital Asset
Management and Contract Rights
Management systems. Mark
Kapczynski,
manager
of Microsoft Consulting Group,
Media & Entertainment, presented a fully functional
workflow that highlighted the benefits of instant access to rights clearance
information while selecting broadcast quality video for use, delivery or
consumption.
Microsoft’s goal is to help the industry visualize
some of the key digital processes that will become core to the studio,
publisher and distributor of the future. Their vision directly addresses
many previously unresolved issues relating to Internet Streaming Media and
Video on Demand. To accomplish this they utilize Microsoft tools (Microsoft®
BizTalk™ Server 2000),
Microsoft software applications (Microsoft® Windows
Media™ Services, Media Store) and best of breed partner solutions
(eMotion
Mediapartner, Mediasite,
Jaguar System 7,
Stellcom) to create an extraordinary 30 minute demonstration
of the richness of the business to business and business to consumer
entertainment video on demand delivery that is now practical. Large crowds
saw Mark eloquently perform this magic three times each day for three days
running, without a hitch!
The presentation took a digital video feature film
through its entire lifecycle from ingestion by Mediasite to management by
eMotion to rights clearance by Jaguar
through Biztalk and then on to delivery via Microsoft Media Store and
Stellcom’s innovative personal digital assistant technologies. In addition
to showcasing seamless access to Jaguar from within eMotion, a highlight was
the actual use of an Internet aware cell phone to order digital delivery of
a movie to a consumer’s set top box for later home viewing.
Jaguar partner eMotion, led by product manager,
Michael Burger, is clearly the digital
asset management system leader in providing contract rights management
capabilities to its clients. eMotion was responsible for the key spark that
produced this revolutionary presentation. In April,
NAB in Las Vegas was the site of eMotion’s groundbreaking
demonstration of their ability to instantly answer sophisticated rights
clearance questions during the video selection and delivery process. Key to
this accomplishment were eMotion’s exceptional understanding of the issues
involved and their link to Jaguar System 7 using Microsoft’s Biztalk.
Special thanks are offered for the enthusiastic support of longtime Jaguar
client Hallmark Entertainment in
providing their first class television material for processing and
presentation.
This month, Jaguar is sending its top System 7
technical team to Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington
campus to dramatically expand eMotion’s pioneering integration
efforts. XML will be used in a phased approach that will ultimately result
in the creation of DAM information access standards in these three key
areas:
Asset Creation/Ingestion:
System 7 will automatically establish a definitive metadata link for assets
and sub-assets (clips, stills, articles, voiceovers, likeness, music…) to
enable true interoperation with DAM. Thumbnail images are shown within
System 7 to enable instant validation during query and data entry
activities.
Availability Clearance/Hold:
System 7 services will enhance DAM with additional search/filtering
criteria, asset misuse prevention and the single step generation of
exclusive holds and pending sales/uses.
Digital Delivery/Transaction:
System 7 will authorize final rights and credit clearance for actual
delivery or internal consumption. Watermarking becomes practical with the
System 7 asset code and, most interestingly, the sales contract number under
which the asset is being released. Delivery or use instantly updates the
System 7 contract database, Availabilities and when appropriate, initiates a
System 7 Accounts Receivable billing transaction.
Jaguar News looks forward to providing further updates
as System 7 pushes the state of the art to ever-higher levels. Many thanks
to Microsoft and eMotion for expanding the role of XML integration in that
vision.

Supreme Court
Impact
June 26 saw the announcement of a major Supreme
Court decision that changes the balance of power between the authors and
publishers of articles of all types. A challenging situation, to say the
least! The good news is that, as System 7 increasingly becomes a mainstay
in magazine and book publishing, the ability to consistently and
accurately capture ancillary exploitation rights becomes completely
practical.
The emerging mainstream acceptance of Digital Asset
Management and Intellectual Property eCommerce
are already inspiring extensive rights clearance research, particularly
among owners of premier film, television and magazine assets. Add the
enhanced negotiating strength granted by New York Times vs. Tasini to
content creators to this mix and expensive oversights become a major
occupational hazard! Companies relying on manual contract and rights
tracking methods are recognizing that the “grace period” to get their houses
in order has expired.
For the benefit of readers that are interested in the
details of this decision, Jaguar News considered reprinting fine articles
from either the Los Angeles Times or
Hollywood Reporter, but realized that
this was neither the time nor the place to be pushing that envelope! For
